Wain comes to Emory from Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Health in Charleston, where he is chief operating officer. Emory said he help develop integrated clinical programs at the four MUSC hospitals and related clinics in Charleston. He also oversaw more than $1 billion in major capital projects for that health system.

Before joining MUSC, Wain worked at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey from 2001 to 2013.

Wain began his professional career as an Army officer and Blackhawk pilot. He retired from the reserve component of military service in 2008.

“Matt is a highly energetic, positive and dynamic leader who will drive and lead the stellar teams at Emory University Hospital, Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital and Emory University Hospital at Wesley Woods,” Dr. Bryce Gartland, Emory Healthcare Hospital Group president, said in a statement. “We are confident Matt will be a tremendous addition to our leadership team and help propel our hospitals to continued success.”

In September, Gartland was promoted to hospital group president from his CEO job with the three Emory hospitals. Emory said Gartland was instrumental in leading the nationwide search for his successor.
